Studying Chinese in Taiwan

Important: This page is part of my a series of pages about the Chinese language, containing and organising resources, tools, articles, reflections, links, and much, much more. To explore the other areas, please visit my Chinese section!

I started studying Chinese in Taiwan in the autumn of 2008 and I have gathered some experience and resources that will be helpful for other people coming to Taiwan to study. In the future, I hope to be able to collect a number of articles here, along with word lists for commonly used text books. Being quite busy at the moment, though, I have decided to go ahead and go online with this section now with what I have, rather than waiting for a hypothetical future completion of this part of the website. Right now, the following material can be found here.

Resources – Text books, word lists, universities
Musings – Various thought on studying in Taiwan
Schools – My impressions of Taiwanese education

Resources

Practical Audio-Visual Chinese – This is an excellent series of textbooks that I can recommend anyone who’s interested in traditional characters. I don’t guarantee that the resources here are perfect, but I have done my best. For volume one and two, I only cared about the characters, so be careful with the definitions if you’re a beginner (if somebody would like to improve the definitions, please send me an e-mail). The format is for ZDT (see the Tools section, but can easily be used independently.

Taiwan Today – An Intermediate Course (今日台灣中級漢語課程) – This text book is probably the best I’ve encountered, but it’s not part of a series, so you have to check that the level is appropriate. It’s especially good for introducing more formal, written Chinese. Everything in the books comes in both simplified and traditional characters, so it might be useful for students on the mainland, too.
