Explaining the 101 list, 8: Computer, meta

This is the eighth and last of the posts in which I explain and motivate the items on my 101-in-1001 list. The list itself can be viewed here, where you can also find a list of all posts related to the list. If you want to follow my progress in more detail, you should check my profile page at the Day Zero Project.

Fix the browser bug on Snigel.nu

People using certain versions of Internet Explorer are experiencing problems with Snigel.nu. It looks perfectly fine in any other browser and even in some versions of IE. This is probably not my fault (I mean, since when was Microsoft known for making browsers compatible with web standards?), but it becomes my problem since some people can’t view the site properly. What happens is that everything stacks, so the menu comes last, after all the posts. I will probably need help fixing this. Are you interested? I’ll get you a pizza.

Merge SoaringCloudDragon.blogspot.com and Snigel.nu

For those of you who have missed that, I’m running a blog in Chinese as well. This is mostly because I want to practise writing Chinese, but perhaps something else will come of it as well. The point is that I don’t like Blogspot very much and I would like to merge the two sites. This is a lot easier in later versions of WordPress, so it should be possible to make the sites use the same database and look the same, although the posts will of course still be separate since most people who read my website either don’t want to read in English or don’t understand Chinese.

Sort and organise all personal files on all computers and all servers

My digital existence is a bit fragmented at the moment. I’m running two laptops and I still have old files on my previous stationary computer that I might want to keep. I need to go through everything and figure out how to store, synch and backup everything. I also have files on various web servers that badly need sorting.

Sort and organise all photos

Although I seldom take photos, I have accumulated a fair amount of pictures over the years. Right now, they are simply stored in a big pile in some folders on my hard drive and if I really wanted to find something, I wouldn’t even know where to start. Putting everything together and sorting the photos would be a good idea.

Establish a file system that works over many computers

This is really an extension of the above-mentioned two goals. Once I feel I have structured my files nicely, I want to find a way to synch everything or parts of the files between the computers I use. It seems most likely that minor things, such as personal files, will be shared using Dropbox, and that the rest will have to be synched manually.

Now let’s have a look at the meta section of the list, where I have some goals related to the list itself.

Explain and motivate all goals on the list

This is what I’m currently doing and this task is completed when this post is published. The idea is of course that by going through the list, I will weed out goals that real don’t belong there. I have changed a number of them as a result of motivating each and every one, so I think it was a good idea. Also, I’ve let other people know what  I mean with certain goals that on their own are far from self-explanatory.

Write about the former list, the current and the relationship between them

The most relevant question of all is of course why I want to start a list again. I didn’t finish all the things on the old list and I have been known to voice dislike with the whole set up, so why go at it yet again? I have my reasons, and I intend to write about them more extensively in an article. Briefly put, my motivation is that I hope that the list will provide me with a sharpened focus in some areas that otherwise might be lagging behind. I also think that even though the previous list was not fully completed, I still regard the project as hugely successful; I tried many new things and learnt much that I wouldn’t have done or learnt if it weren’t for the list.

Publish something about each task on the list

Putting the list online and talking about is one of the basic ideas behind the list. By telling other people what I want to achieve, I hope that you will be able to motivate me. Discussing the results of the gaols, whether they were failures or successes is a natural final step in the process. I’ve already one finished task I haven’t written about (the one about going to a party where I know less than 10% of the people), but that will come in due time.

Write a concluding essay on the subject of this list

The ultimate step is to conclude the entire project by writing about it. I think that I have learnt something from the previous list and I think that I will be more satisfied with the outcome of this one. I’m also older and I think that my interests and my life are less likely to go through radical changes in the coming years, which is more ideal for pursuing the goals on this list. However, only time will tell if I’m right, but regardless of what transpires, I’m still going to write about it!
