Important: This post is mostly obsolete. I no longer use ZDT and I see no reason that you should either. The words for these books are now available from within Anki, a program I think far superior to ZDT. The old lists will remain here, of course, but they won’t be updated.
I have now assembled all new words from the first three volumes of Short-term Spoken Chinese into two ZDT backup files ready to be imported for revision and reference. The volumes covered are for the second editions of Short-term Spoken Chinese: Threshold/Hanyu kouyu sucheng: rumen (汉语口语速成入门) and Short-term Spoken Chinese: Elementary/Hanyu kouyu sucheng: jichu (汉语口语速成基础). Please note that these word lists contain all words necessary to understand the texts, which means that they contain more that do the lists in the books. Up to and including chapter 12 also cover new words in the grammar sections as well.
I take no responsibility whatsoever that these lists of words are correct, but I highly doubt that there are many errors, since I have used them to revise for my own exams. However, should you find anything wrong, please let me know so that I can correct the mistake.
The translations were made in many different ways. If applicable, the included “CEDICT” was used. If not applicable, I have used the excellent online dictionary Dict.cn. In rare cases when all else has failed, I have translated my teachers Swedish translations into English.
Please note that proper names are put in a separate category for Short-term Spoken Chinese: Elementary/Hanyu kouyu sucheng: jichu.
Words from Threshold/rumen (71K)
Words from Elementary/jichu (86K)
Update: The word lists have been moved, but the links should now be working properly again.

Thanks for doing this! But which program do I open it with? I tried Word and it was messy.

Hi – thank you so much for doing this!
I have tried to import it into ZDT, but the characters do not appear.
Please advise if there is something special I need to do to make them show?
I have successfully imported other word lists to ZDT without problem.
Thanks again, what a great resource! -
?? for the quick reply… will keep trying!

I just tried to download your lists, but I get a broken link – have they moved? I hope I can get them since it sounds perfect for what I need.

Thank you for your contribution!
It is really very appreciated!!
Wish you a good time in China! -
Hey Olle,
thanks for the big effort you put into assembling the word lists and uploading them! I imported the word lists into ZDT without any problems. However, there is apparently no possibility of printing the cards from ZDT so it seems that the only option to print the cards is to copy the entries from ZDT to a predefined table in Microsoft Word (please correct me if I’m wrong!). But apparently the vocabulary from Short Term Spoken Chinese is not organized with reference to the lessons the words appear in – and figuring out which word belongs to what lesson and then typing it manually in Word will be a pain with more than 1500 words in the vocabulary. So I was hoping that you had any thoughts / help to offer regarding that issue. Thanks, buddy!-
Hey,
thanks for your answer. That’s pretty odd; I’m using ZDT version 7 and the words only appear in one long list of around 1500 characters with ‘Characters – Pinyin – Definition’ and no apparent subdivision into chapters. I AM new to ZDT but I think I looked everything through and didn’t come up with a solution. Is it possible to open your STSC wordlist with other software than ZDT to copy into a programme like Word manually? And have you been able to print your wordlist as flashcards? Thanks for your time. I’ll buy you a beer some day! -
Hi Olle,
I just downloaded Anki but I’m going to have to figure out how to use it. Do you have cards that I can use with this program from Short-Term Spoken English 2nd Edition Threshold Vol.1?-
Hi Olle,
rather than try to figure out how to convert, I just downloaded ZDT and the threshold backup file you created. It’s working great, but I have a question. There are 214 characters in the Radicals category, so when I try to do the Radicals as flash cards, it seems overwhelming.I thought maybe I could learn the first 20 on the list and then start on the next 20 and so on, but I can’t figure out how to do this with flashcards; it seems flashcards are always random : (
I know you don’t use ZDT anymore, but do you have any advice for me.

Nevermind, I figured out how to export a category, modify the text file, and then import it as a new category. Thanks so much for creating the file for this textbook!
