Occasionally, I watch a film that is beautiful, and sometimes I find those that are masterfully directed, have interesting stories or stars good actors. I very seldom come across films that have all these things at once, but Amelie from Montmartre has certainly got it right in almost every regard.

This is the story of the lonely and shy Amelie, who works as a waitress, but decides to help people change their lives to the better. She does everything she can to bring this about, and most often than not, she succeed. However, she always neglects herself and even though she can help others, she is unable to help herself.

As I said in the first sentence, there are many reasons why this movie deserves such a high grade, but the most important one is probably the way the story is told. It is difficult to explain, but the director uses a lot of unconventional techniques, not missing a single opportunity to promote the overall feeling of happiness that permeates the whole story. As an example, let me take Amelie’s neighbour with fragile bones, who paints the same picture every year, but never can get the girl with the glass of water correctly. Even though they are speaking about the picture, it is obvious that most of what they say also refers to Amelie herself. There are numerous such techniques that impress me deeply.

Apart from this brilliance, there’s nothing seriously wrong with this movie; all parts are satisfactory in some way. For me, it’s also nice to see a film in French, which was a long time ago now, and even though I only understand the general meaning of the dialogues if I don’t watch the subtitles, it’s still nice. In short, Amelie from Montmartre is great and there is no reason whatsoever you shouldn’t see it immediately if you haven’t already!
