Title: Stranger than Fiction
Directed by:
Marc Forster

Stranger than Fiction is the story about Harold Crick, a man who one day begins to hear a woman’s voice in his head, narrating his life in third person. This is of course very strange, especially when it turns out that this woman apparently knows things only he himself would know. It becomes even more unsettling when she seems to be able to direct his life and forsee his future. Thinking that he is the main character in a novel, he sets out to find the source of the voice and try to avoid the death that is reserved for him at the end of the narrative.

This is an example of a film which earns its grade almost purely because of characters and their interaction. In some films, I might consider one of the roles interesting or even brilliant, but in Stranger than Fiction, I can say that of all three main characters. Harold Crick’s dry and exact manners are wonderful, especially in contrast to the flamboyant, anarchist baker with whom he falls in love. The voice in Crick’s head and the woman to whom it belongs is also perfect.

The story is adequate, though not as brilliant as is the basic concept from which it springs (I prefer not to spoil the film by explaining the concept). The reason I cannot give Stranger than Fiction five snails is because I am not entirely satisfied with the ending and I felt a slight let down when the plot was revealed. Still, it is one of the best films I have seen in a long time and I urge to watch it. Now.
