Title: Shooter
Directed by:
Antoine Fuqua
Written by:
Jonathan Lemkin
Year: 2007

It should not come as a surprise that I am no fan of pure action films, and since Shooter is one of those, I do not think very highly of it. The story is centred on a ninj… sorry, a sniper, called Bob Lee Swagger, with a somewhat exaggerated set of skills. He has retreated to a peaceful abode in the mountains, but gets hired to unravel a plot threatening to kill the president. If the script had been competently written, perhaps one would have been surprised when the plot succeeds and Swagger is accused of the murder. Of course, like the true ni… sorry, sniper… he is, he determines to set out on a quest to find the real culprits.

Admittedly, the film is moderately directed and visually it works alright. The problem is that this kind of shallow story painted over with much blood does not do it for me, especially when the film merely consists of these three scenes: Swagger fleeing, Swagger killing people with his sniper rifle and Swagger calling for reinforcements (for the opponent, that is, not for himself). There are some attempts at pressing an ideological point, but it feels more like something added as an afterthought to suit people like me, than something thoroughly integrated into the film.

However, the film was fairly agreeable to watch; it was one of those movies during which one can have a running conversation while it is running, without spoiling the experience. There is at least one truly surprise scene in the film, so watch out for it. Or don’t, because I really cannot recommend this film to anyone but sniper aficionados who also happen love action movies.
